My
name is Lizbeth Luna; I am a twenty-year-old, first generation Hispanic
university student. I am the oldest of three children in my nuclear family. As
well as the oldest grandchild, in both my mother’s and father’s families. I am
currently a senior in the degree of Public Services and Public Policy at
Arizona State University. I plan to graduate in the spring semester of 2015. I
am currently a recipient of the Los Diablos Scholarship; which is a
full-tuition scholarship for high achieving, Hispanic students.
Los
Diablos has given me a variety of valuable lessons, along with opened the doors
to many new opportunities for me. I’ve been able to participate in a leadership
role with Los Diablos, that has taught me how to balance important tasks and
school. Which has shown me having responsibilities aids in forming character.
Also this year I learned from a former Los Diablos scholar that all of my accomplishments in both school and in
life are not only for me but also my family. Based on the fact that I am
setting the bar for the children who came after me. For example say that I was
to quit college, I would be the excuse for the children in my family. It would
fall along the lines “Well if she quit and she was the most driven, then why
should I do it?”. Now I understand that
every achievement big or small is important because it may make a difference
for someone else.
I
currently have a congressional internship with Congressman Ruben Gallego’s
Phoenix office. I hope to accomplish three key goals with this internship. One
of the goals is that I would like to further my understanding of how the political
system works. As well as what types of government agencies are focused on
serving the public. Along with how I can better serve my community as both a citizen
and leader.
This is an excellent introduction to who you are and what you hope to accomplish. I am a big Ruben fan! I intern with AZ AFL-CIO which also strongly supports Representative Gallego. In 2010, when Ruben was running for State House, I would make calls to voters for him. In 2013, I proudly knocked doors for Kate Gallego's city council campaign. I'm sure that working in Ruben's office is an excellent opportunity and will give you a great opportunity to network. I'm sure, including you, he has a great staff. I also like Luis Heredia very much.
