Goals accomplished

At the Office of Congressman Ruben Gallego, I learned a variety of lessons. Some of the most important were learning how to network. I learned that it is important to learn how to talk to people because harboring relationships are key to expanding communities. A great deal of the time the relationships can lead having people believe in your mission.

Also I learned how to conduct research, and why it is important. The research I was able to do was based on governmental agencies. I learned how to go back and forth between information. As well as making sure to select what information was key. I was able to achieve me install goals, of learning how the government works, and how to become a better leader. As of today I feel like my perspective of the government has changed to know that as citizens we are the ones who make the difference and the government is in change of protecting our values.

Thank you

Dear Office of Congressman Ruben Gallego,

I would like to thank you for this wonderful opportunity. I have learned a great lead not only about local, federal government but also about life. I have been surrounded by people who want me to see me grow as a professional. Thank you for trusting me to do projects that require dedication and attention to detail. This allowed me to learned how to pin point important information and most importantly how to write in a professional setting.

I am grateful because I was able to learn about why team work is important. It is remarkable to see people from different walks of life working together under one cause. I think that as an Office and individuals, you all are amazing and set great examples for students like me. I was able to see the bigger picture that in order to see change happen you need to take action so it does. It has differently been the best  internship experience I could of asked for.

             Thank You,

The strengths of the Office of Congressman Ruben Gallego

The strengths of the Office of Congressman Ruben Gallego are a variety. Perhaps the greatest one is teamwork; they all work together to accomplish tasks. I think that this important because it allows different people to rotate on a task and make sure that nothing is missed. Another strength is that they have a master calendar, which allows everyone to see what each of them is participating in. This would play into communication, they are always trying to talk and let each other know what is happening.

If I were in changer of a similar organization I would not do anything differently. I think that as a team they all work together well.  Yet also I think that it helps that they all get along, I could not image an office where people do not get along. I know that they are busy but yet they are dedicated to their jobs and it is what helps the Office of Congressman Ruben Gallego be successful.

Career Services Internship & Job Fair

I was able to attend the Downtown Campus Career Services  Internship & Job Fair. For the first half of the event I represented the Office of Congressman Ruben Gallego. The Intern Coordinator Gloria Galeno, felt that it would be nice if as interns we were able to tell others about our experiences. Along with what a typical day looks like, task and projects we work on. Students also asked questions about the internship as well as how was the work environment.

For the second part of the event, I participated as a student. I did not see anything the caught my attention. Yet I was able to find interesting materials for friends. Among those materials were items like the LSAT course offered by ASU. Overall I enjoyed the event because I was able to share my experiences with other students.  I wish luck to those who have the chance to intern for Congressman Ruben Gallego.

Plans After Graduation

I'm still trying to figure out what I plan to do after graduation. It is difficult to make decisions, I think for the first time in years I do not know what to do. I know that I want to purse that political engagement arena but I do not know how to go about it. I may work on a political campaign in the upcoming year, to obtain experience. I base this idea on that campaigns are grass root movements, which grow and join communities together.

Even if I may not know exactly what I want to do, I am happy with the fact that I feel ready to graduate. I think having the opportunity to expose myself to new places will help me in knowing where I want to go. As well as the experiences I have had untill today I feel are enough to help me grow in the future. As of today I don't wish I would stay long. I know that eventually I want to go to law school or grad school.

Arizona State Capitol

As part of expanding our knowledge of how government works, our Internship Coordinator Gloria Galeno, arranged a visit to the Arizona State Capitol. We were honored to meet Representative Velasquez, who was elected to represent Arizona's 29th District. We were able to tour the Arizona State Legislature. We had a tour of the Gallery, which is where the public can sit in on the voting section.  It was amazing to see where some of the State's laws come from.

Representative Velasquez, also explained how the decision process works, and it is interesting.
We also learned about the committee assignments and how they work. Representative Velasquez sits in on the the Federalism and States' Rights committee, along with the Rules committee. Overall our trip was filled with new knowledge of how the local government operates.

Public Service

How does your organization demonstrate public service?
Prephase the vital role of the Office of Congressman Ruben Gallego is to represent the people of Arizona's 7th Congressional District.  The Congressman and his teams of Arizona and D.C. work hard to make sure that the voice the constituents are heard on Capital Hill. So far they have formed veterans affairs and African American advisory committees. All are interned to help voice the goals and concerns of those who are a part of the 7th Congressional District. The public service provided is to promote a more democratic America, where everyone belongs.

The office to Congressman Ruben Gallego has a variety of ways of preforming public service. The clearest example I can give is the from the team of constituents services. They deal with case work which means that they review constituents' issues that deal with federal  agencies and refer or try to help find solutions to  their grievances. The office is a resource for all of the voters of the Congressional District 7. But if you need help and aren't with the boundaries they help you find your Representative.

I Am Poem

I wanted to rewrite an I Am Poem, since the  last time I wrote one I was in 10th grade. I am sure that many areas have changed.  As I wrote this I was impressed how all of the right words just came to me. I think that writing is a good way to put things into perspective. Yet also it allows for a place to combine everything that truly matter. I recommend you write one it help connect the dots.

I Am
I am goal oriented and strong.
I wonder if can make a difference someday.
I hear he who is not longer here.
I see an ocean of recognition.
I want to achieve greatness and never look back.
I am goal oriented and strong.

I pretend I can do it all and still be the best.
I feel pushed away.
I touch Andres' heart.
I worry about not working things out.
I cry because you will not see me walk across the stage and down the aisle.
I am goal oriented and  strong.

I understand that a degree will never be taken back.
I say it all happens for a reason.
I dream of being a politician.
I try to be happy and nice.
I hope that tomorrow will be a better day.
I am goal oriented and a strong.

The Walking Dead

So I do not watch a great deal of television on a regular  basis but I do watch The Walking Dead. I like watching it because the season begins in October has a holiday pause and then resumes in February. I gives me a motivation every Sunday to make sure I have all of my homework done before it begins so I can watch it entirely. Although it is a bit violent I enjoy it because it integrates key core values. Amongst them are loyalty, family, and never giving up even when the odds are against you.

Even when the world is filled with walkers (aka zombies) not all humans can be trusted. I think this a great depiction of the real world based on the idea that you need to trust but not trust blinding in certain situations. I also enjoy watching The Walking Dead because it builds the characters evolution over time and how they all being something unique to the group. Yet I have my favorites they are
Daryl, Carol and Maggie. They all are strong physically and are key assets to the group but they have many internal conflicts that they avoid.

One Month Left!

Hello To All,
I hope that all is well so far and that classes are still as exciting as they were in the beginning. I know that for me this will be the longest month of my life. I think that it is because I am extremely excited to graduate in May. Along with that comes the ability to finally close a chapter of my life that has had many ups and downs.  A road which I started on, in high school by taking community college classes and will end with a bachelors in Public Service and Public Policy. Obtaining any degree means that one was able to survive the torture in the sense that there were many sleepless nights, eventless weekends and reading/ homework overload that were endured.

Yet even will all of this I know that in the end it was all worth it even if that times I wanted to throw  in the towel. I am glad that I have learned a great deal this last three years. As well as I have found who I really am and what I truly believe. I no longer stay quite but rather speak my mind. As far as what will I do after graduation I do not know yet, but I think it is okay because it is a time to explore the real world.

Leadership at the Office of Congressman Ruben Gallego

I wanted to use this video because it applies to the questions of leadership: How does leadership plays a role in your internship? How do your co-workers or supervisor display leadership capabilities?

Are you able to demonstrate any leadership skills?
I am able to demonstrate leadership skills because I am able to work on project and take change of them. As well as representing the Congressman in the public.

Profile Of Career

A person who has the career that I aspire to have in the future is Heather Jenkins, in the Office of Congressman Ruben Gallego. Ms. Jenkins is a community outreach' field representative.
This position entails representing the organization you work for with other community organizations or individuals. The main job responsibilities are contacting community partners and setting up meeting with them. In order to make sure the relationships are well maintained. It also requires attending to community events and local conferences.

Ms. Jenkins choose this career after obtaining experience as a field organizer. It is
recommended that one has a degree in organizing people or groups or in the related work field. As for training; leadership training, and campaign can teach one how to organize others. Advice that she has given me in the past is to network and work on campaigns to gain experience. New trends that are taking place are young people joining the field. I am interested in this position because I feel that it is a great way to be involved in the community and network.

My Los Diablos Speech

Hello, Good Evening, My name is Lizbeth Luna and I am the President of Los Diablos Student Chapter. I come from modest beginnings. My family, immigrants to the United States, taught me the value of hard work, determination, and the drive to succeed. These values helped me overcome many obstacles. Until the fifth grade, for example, I was illiterate – I couldn’t read or write. But this spring, I will be graduating from ASU with a degree in Public Service and Public Policy. I will be the first person in my family to obtain a college degree. Of course, people have helped me along the way. I’ve had many mentors. But my greatest mentor was my grandmother. Ever since I was a little girl, she dreamed of me graduating from college. I believe in myself because my grandmother believes in her dream, meaning she believes in me. My grandmother’s dream of my success in college could not have been fulfilled without Los Diablos waiving my tuition. But financial assistance wasn’t the only thing Los Diablos gave me; they also opened many doors for me, doors that once seemed impossible to unlock. This semester, for example, I interned for Congressman Ruben Gallego. In fact, interning in his office has inspired me to pursue a career in public service. In addition to the Congressman, Los Diablos has introduced me to countless other people who have motivated me to succeed, counseled me about my professional and academic career, and tutored me about life. Because of them, I am the person who I am today. Of course, I’m not the only scholar with these incredible experiences. In addition to interning with Congresswomen Krysten Sinema and Congressman Ed Pastor, my fellow scholars have also interned at media firms, accounting firms, and public relations firms. Other scholars have landed researching jobs in science and engineering. While our work experiences are different, the goal is the same: how to use the skills we’ve learned to contribute and improve our communities. Helping students like us is what Los Diablos set out to do when they founded this organization three decades ago. I would now like to take this opportunity to introduce to you the 2014-2015 Los Diablos Scholars. Scholars Please Rise Will the graduating seniors please join me at this time? Along with Los Diablos Board President, Tania Torres. We the graduating seniors would like to thank Los Diablos Board Members and Donors, for being fundamental to our success at ASU. Thank Los Diablos, Valued sponsors and ASU, for making this possible. See you all next year.

Career Services Pre-Law Info Session Feb-25

I attended the Pre-Law Info Session at the Downtown Phoenix Campus. I decided to attend for a variety of reasons. The strongest being that a variety of people who surround me are considering the idea of attending to law school. Secondly I wanted to learn more about what Law School is about and what the process is to attend. The session reaffirmed that Law School is not for everyone and that it is very pricey. I also learned a great deal of new information that I had never considered before.

I did learn that the LSAT a four hour exam which determines your legibility to attend. ASU prefers candidates with a 3.4-3.7 GPA and who obtain a scored of 150 and above on the LSAT. There are also merit-based scholarships, and Arizona has a law that only allows these types of scholarship for Law School. As well as it is a five year process, one year for admission, three years of studies, and one year to obtain the results from the Bar Test.  I really enjoyed learning about what the process even if I am not currently looking into Law School, it is always a consideration.

DACA/DAPA

On Tuesday February 17, 2015, Federal District Court Judge Andrew S. Hanen from Texas put a hold on President Obama' executive order on immigration. Yet this has not been an impediment for the office of Congressman Ruben Gallego to participate in community forums about DACA/DAPA. One event was host by his office’ constituent services at South Mountain High School. In which lawyers and other members of the community participated in a panel. They explained what the difference between DACA/DAPA is, along with what the potential requirements will be if the executive order is implemented. The lawyers caution about other legal representatives who may already requesting money for the process, since there currently is no process.

Another event to which we attended to was a forum presented by Lucha and other non-profit organizations. Which also focused on DACA/DAPA. They had panelist from different community organizations who presented DACA/DAPA information. Yet they also provided resources that maybe are useful of the demographic who will be benefit by DACA/DAPA. Some of these resources were scholarships, an international consulate. Overall I learned what DACA/DAPA is and how important it is to many communities in Arizona especially with Congressional District 7.
